18/10/2025: Another Klassiker victory at last

In the Klassiker, a huge statement! In October 2025, Bayern overcame Borussia Dortmund 2-1 in the current campaign after going three games without a victory over their bitter rivals. With their 11th victory in their 11th game of the season, the Reds tied the record set by none other than BVB in 2015–16 in German professional football.

At the Allianz Arena, Vincent Kompany’s team took control right away. Harry Kane gave them a well-earned lead from a Joshua Kimmich corner and scored for the seventh straight competitive game, which was already his 22nd goal of the season and the 400th of his club career. After halftime, Dortmund was more determined, but Michael Olise scored the second goal after Luis Díaz did a nice job. Julian Brandt cut the lead, but Bayern persevered and won thanks to a tackle from Kane in stoppage time. The prize, which highlighted the remarkable display of strength, was 21 points, a seven-point advantage over Dortmund, and a record start.

Nothing could have gone more smoothly: Harry Kane, a striker, made the difference in his first Klassiker. In the opening meeting of the 2023–24 season, the England captain nearly single-handedly led Bayern to a 4-0 victory by scoring a hat-trick against Dortmund. Dayot Upamecano had given the Reds the lead early in the game before the striker started his goal-fest. Leroy Sané’s corner was headed into the goal by the center-back in the fourth minute. It was all about Kane after that. Three goals were scored by the forward (9′, 72′, 90’+3). On Saturday night, Bayern supporters will be looking forward to another Kane masterpiece against BVB.

23/04/2022: Festivities following the victory over BVB

The 2021–2022 season’s Matchday 31 presented an extremely unique situation. Bayern welcomed Borussia Dortmund at the Allianz Arena, ten points ahead of the second-place team in the Bundesliga. The squad would win their ninth straight championship with a victory at home. The Reds delivered! Due to goals from Robert Lewandowski and Serge Gnabry, FCB led 2-0 at the half after a solid first half. Bayern seemed unfazed even when Emre Can drew one back. The title celebrations could start after Jamal Musiala scored the game’s last goal, making it 3-1.

FCB gala to win the title on June 4, 2019

Arguably, this game was the pivotal moment in last season’s title defense. FC Bayern put on an amazing show when they hosted Borussia on Matchday 28 at the Allianz Arena on April 6, 2019. From the beginning, the Munich squad dominated the league leaders, took a 4-0 lead at halftime, and celebrated a well-earned 5-0 triumph. FCB surpassed BVB in the standings, went ahead on goal differential, and maintained this advantage until the end of the campaign.

November 23, 2013: Götze’s red return

For one player in particular, the first Bundesliga game between Bayern and Dortmund following their battle in the Champions League final held great significance: Mario Götze, who had joined Bayern from Borussia only a few months prior, faced his old team for the first time. The attacker decided to warm up in the tunnel prior to his substitution due to some animosity from the BVB supporters, but this did not lessen his performance. After just ten minutes on the field, the eventual world champion broke the tie and gave FCB a 1-0 lead (66). Just before the finish, Thomas Müller (87) and Arjen Robben (85) also helped the record champs win 3-0.

11/04/2012: Loss in the race for the title

This loss was painful since FC Bayern would have taken the lead in the thrilling 2011–12 title battle with a victory against direct rivals Dortmund. Arjen Robben missed a penalty kick with Dortmund ahead 1-0, and to make things worse, he was then taunted by opponent Neven Subotić. BVB won the championship by six points, while Bayern finished in second place. However, if Robben hadn’t recovered from this setback and repaid Subotić and company at Wembley in 2013, he would not be the legend he is today.

Ribery’s joyous leap upon van Gaal on December 9, 2009

Franck Ribéry put an end to any rumors of strained relations with the new FCB coach Louis van Gaal when Bayern defeated Dortmund 5-1 early in the 2009–10 season. It was followed by a spectacular celebration. The Frenchman rushed to the sidelines and jumped into the Dutch coach’s arms after scoring Bayern’s third goal (65) with a free kick that he had buried in the corner. “Franck showed he loves his coach,” van Gaal subsequently told reporters.

09/11/2002: Koller, the BVB behemoth, maintains a clean sheet

In the top-of-the-table match on Matchday 12 of 2002–03, eventual champions FC Bayern defeated defending champions Dortmund 2-1. The man of the match, at least for a portion of the game, donned black and yellow despite BVB’s loss. In the seventh minute, towering giant Jan Koller scored for the visitors. Borussia had used all of their substitutes when goalie Jens Lehmann was sent off in the 67th minute, forcing the Czech to wear the goalkeeper’s shirt. Koller performed so well as a goalie and preserved a clean sheet that he was named to the day’s “Kicker” team.

07/04/2001: Kahn’s celebratory fist and a flurry of cards

On Matchday 28 of 2000–01, leaders FC Bayern (49 points) traveled to second place Dortmund (48) and engaged in a fiercely competitive match. It was a real football war with an unforgettable conclusion. Ten yellow cards, one second yellow, and two consecutive reds were issued by referee Hartmut Strampe, the most in a single Bundesliga match. The final score was 1-1 thanks to goals from Fredi Bobic (52) and Roque Santa Cruz (6). Oliver Kahn would have been defeated when Tomáš Rosický’s late free kick bounced straight off the inside of the post and into his arms. At the end of the season, the Munich team won the championship by keeping BVB at bay.

March 4, 1999: ‘Kung-Fu-Kahn’ spearheads a resurgence

Oliver Kahn demonstrated the intensity of the rivalry between Dortmund and Bayern in April 1999. The ‘Titan’ made waves before halftime in a 2-2 tie at the Westfalenstadion when he leaped with an outstretched leg towards Stephane Chapuisat, who was coming up. Referee Bernd Heynemann, however, found no need to caution Kahn because there was no touch and the offside flag had already been raised. After the interval, Bayern, who were now behind 0–2, equalized through goals from Alexander Zickler (58) and Carsten Jancker (63), and Kahn saved a penalty kick from Lars Ricken in the 77th minute to salvage a point.

09/08/1986: The renowned Miss Mill

At the post-match press conference following the 2-2 draw between Bayern and Dortmund on Matchday 1 of 1986–87, Udo Lattek reflected on the game-deciding moment: “I’m thinking about what bonus I should give him – I don’t know whether he’ll accept it.” Lattek was referring to Frank Mill of Dortmund, whose iconic miss will live on in Bundesliga history. Perhaps the most famous howler in Germany’s top league to this day, the attacker struck the post rather than the empty net after getting past Bayern goalkeeper Jean-Marie Pfaff.

At the then-Grünwalder Straße stadium, Bayern crushed BVB 11-1 during the 1971–72 season. The home team’s goals came from Gerd Müller (4), “Bulle” Roth, Uli Hoeneß (both 2), Franz Beckenbauer, Wilhelm Hoffmann, and Paul Breitner; Dortmund’s consolation goal came from Dieter Weinkauff in the second half. The game gave away exactly where the two teams were going that season: BVB was demoted from the German top flight for the first time in their history, while Bayern emerged victorious.
